A true animal lover, Charley Harper (American, 1922 - 2007) observed the natural world and used his observations to portray a host of species, both wild and domestic, through simple lines and shapes. He conveyed not only the unique form and coloration of his subjects but also their personalities - from the tiniest hummingbird to the largest owl.
Harper developed his deep affinity for the natural world early in life. Growing up in rural West Virginia, he spent many hours exploring the local hills, sketchbook in hand, stopping to draw whatever caught his fancy. After studying at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and the Art Students League of New York, he gained acclaim as a commercial illustrator for numerous publications, most notably The Giant Golden Book of Biology and Animal Kingdom: An Introduction to the Major Groups of Animals, children's books published in the 1960s. As demand for his work grew, he went on to have a successful business producing limited-edition silkscreen prints.
His paintings and posters have been published by a variety of nature and conservation-oriented organizations, such as the National Park Service, the Cincinnati Zoo, the Byrd Polar Research Center, the National Audubon Society, and Costa Rica's Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve.
